Session Theme

Disciple-making is not a linear program but a family around a table, where each believer at every stage contributes and multiplies the character and priorities of Christ - and we are now commissioned to go and do this.

Teaching Block 1: The Four Challenges Reviewed

Core Idea: We have walked through four challenges over four days. Now we see the deeper picture: the four chairs are not a line but a family around a table.

The four challenges reviewed:

A word change that matters: “Disciple” (250+ times in Gospels) disappears after Acts 21:16. Replaced by “Followers of the Way” and “Christians.” Jesus created a family, not a school.
The family table: In a Javanese village, grandparents, parents, and children all contribute around one table. The church should look the same - four chairs around one table, everyone contributing.

Scripture: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations… And surely I am with you always.” - Matthew 28:19-20

Discussion Block 2: The Four Chairs Around the Table

Whole group visual, then small groups

(7 min) Facilitator draws four chairs in a circle around a table. What changes when chairs are in a circle instead of a line?
- Everyone contributes now
- We need each other
- Movement is relational, not just “forward”
(8 min) In groups: Which chair is missing most often in your village church? What can be done?

Teaching Block 3: Spader’s Definition of Disciple-Making

Core Idea: Five parts that summarize the entire workshop.

“Out of my love for God, using my gifts and talents, to multiply the character and priorities of Christ in as many people as possible.”

Part	Meaning
1. Love for God	Great Commandment is the motive. We reproduce what we are
2. Using my gifts	I invest where God shaped me. My disciples need others too
3. Multiply character	Not information - transformation. What are they catching from me?
4. Multiply priorities	Jesus’s priorities: the lost, the young, workers, sending
5. As many as possible	Wide AND deep. A rice farmer plants a field but tends each stalk

Three reminders:

People are at different stages - and that is okay
The Holy Spirit must be at work in every stage (John 15:5)
We must be holy people - we reproduce what we are

Discussion Block 4: The Pearl of Great Price

Whole group storytelling, then pairs

(5 min) The pearl merchant story (Juan Carlos Ortiz): “Everything becomes mine. Now you can use all these things, but remember they are mine.” An exchanged life.
(5 min) In pairs: What has this workshop cost you - or will it cost you - to apply?
(5 min) Silent reflection: “Jesus, I am willing to give you _______ so that I can become a disciple-maker.”

Teaching Block 5: “I Want Names!” - The Final Challenge

Core Idea: The final challenge of the workshop: specific names, specific investment, specific multiplication.

“I Want Names!” - Who are you praying for? Reaching out to? Challenging to follow Jesus?
India story: 400 leaders, each with four generations of disciples they could name. Their greatest joy = their spiritual family tree.
The Great Commission (Matt 28:18-20): A command, not a suggestion. Jesus has authority, He sends us, and He goes with us.
Four generations: Paul -> Timothy -> Reliable People -> Others Also (2 Tim 2:2).
When you return to your village: You have four chairs, four challenges, the Holy Spirit, and one name. That is enough to start a movement.

Scripture: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit - fruit that will last.” - John 15:16

Discussion Block 6: Commissioning Ceremony - Go and Bear Fruit

Whole group - the final sending

(2 min) All participants stand and form a circle.
(3 min) Turn to the person next to you and speak your commitment:
- “I commit to making disciples who can make disciples.”
- “I will not give up.”
- “I will go and bear fruit.”
(5 min) The commissioning charge (facilitator reads).
(5 min) Closing prayer - the disciple’s prayer, recited together:

“I am a disciple of Jesus. I have Holy Spirit power. My face is set; my goal is His Kingdom; my road is narrow; my mission clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded or delayed. I will not give up, shut up, let up until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, preached up for the cause of Christ. I must go until He comes, give until I drop, work until He stops me, complete the task He has given me. And when He comes for His own, He will have no problem recognizing me - I am a disciple of Jesus!”

Application Handles

When you return to your village and feel overwhelmed by the task, remember: you do not need to reach everyone. Start with one person. Use the four challenges: invite them to “come and see” your life, challenge them to “follow” Jesus, equip them to become “fishers of men,” and send them to “go and bear fruit.” One faithful person multiplied is a movement.
When you are tempted to compare your ministry to others or feel inadequate, remember the family table. You have a role to play whether you are a seeker, a new believer, a worker, or a spiritual parent. Do not despise where you are - grow where you are planted. Every chair matters around the table.
When you are discouraged because you do not see immediate results, remember Spader’s definition: disciple-making is out of love for God, using your gifts, to multiply the character and priorities of Christ in as many people as possible. The fruit may not be visible today, but if you are faithful, the harvest will come - thirty, sixty, even a hundred times what was sown. Keep sowing. Keep abiding. Keep going.
